The civic
theatre is located at the corner of Queen Street and Wellesley
Street in Auckland region, New Zealand. The civic theatre is
considered as a historic place, category I. It was built in 1929
and was considered as the largest atmospheric picture house in
Australasia. The public foyer was inspired from Indian motifs
with seated Buddhas, domed ceiling and twisted columns. The main
auditorium could receive up to 2,750 people. The civic theatre
was built by a local contractor, Thomas O’brien. It has been
designed by Charles Bohringer and William Leghton, the cinema
had a tearoom, a wintergarden in its basement. In the civic
theatre nowadays you may have as facilities cinema, theatre and
shopping complex. In the past it was only used as cinema/movie
theatre. |
