You may admire on this picture the view of the harbour of Auckland and you can as well see the tower of Auckland. The port is known as Waitemata Harbour. The harbour is the main passage by sea to Auckland. The Waitemata Harbour connects Auckland to the Hauraki Gulf; the entry is between Devonport and Bastion Point. Devonport is a suburb of Auckland and has a population around 10,000. Devonport is situated on the North Shore. Opposite of the North Shore is the Bastion Point on the South Shore. Devonport is considered to be one of the oldest suburbs of Auckland. The first settlement of Europeans in Devonport was in 1840. The Bastion Point called in maori Takaparawha is an area on the coast located in Orakei in Auckland. In the past the area was owned by Ngati Whatua, a maori tribe, before it was colonised by the British.
