The Waipapa Point is located on the South Island of New Zealand. It is exactly situated on the south coast of the South Island. It is at the complete southwest of the Catlins and is ten km southeast from the Mataura River. There has been a lighthouse constructed on the point because Catlins coastline is considered as very dangerous, there has been a lot of shipwreck near Catlins. The Tararua, a steamer, is one of the most well known shipwrecks in the region. It was in April 1881. It is said that it was the worst shipping disaster. That’s why the construction of a lighthouse, trying to prevent more shipwrecks. The lighthouse started to operate since 1884. The lighthouse is one of the last wooden lighthouses of New Zealand. In 1976 the lighthouse has been automated.
